Quick guide on types of shoe leather: what are the benefits of each?

Tipos de pieles

In Lottusse we care not only about the quality of our products but also about the process, which begins with the selection of the original materials. That is why we have created this quick guide for those who want a first approach to our most common leathers. Find out here which types of shoe leather are the most used ones and what are their benefits.

Types of shoe leather

Calfskin

One of the most common and qualitative skins used to make shoes is Cow Leather of French Calf. In the case of the French Calf, we are talking about the number one leather for quality women ‘s shoes. This type of skin has more advantages compared to others, mainly because it has a finer grain, it is smoother and more durable.

Crust Calf

If we talk about this skin, we are referring to one that has not been treated and is ready to use. It means it has its natural color without having been tanned.

In the case of Lottusse the coloring process is carried out later by the craftsman. That gives shoemakers more room for maneuver since its lighter color is like a blank canvas. It is perfect for achieving a patina or burnished effect. It is also ideal for getting more colorful options like green, red or blue shoes. However, as these skins have not been treated, they are more prone to defects, which is why they will need special care.

Since it is such a natural skin, the selection process is high standard one and there is high precision in the cut, so any flaws or imperfection are more evident than in any other leather.

Box Calf

The quality finishing calf is dyed in the tannery, by the time it is in the hand of the craftsman with the color, a treated skin and died from the origin for its later cutting process. It is the most common option in shoes, and it is practically any leather footwear with a uniform color. However, it offers greater simplicity in maintenance as well as a great durability of the color.

Bookbinder Calf

The shoes made with this type of skin are the most common ones, with an acrylic or laminated coating, which makes it look more polished and shiny. Items like Charol or Antic grant a look of better quality and elegance.

Pebble Grain

All leathers with Grain or Embossy denotation are leathers that are treated with relief patterns, to create textures and designs, from a smooth leather. Specifically, the Pebble Grain has two differentiating aspects that allow you to buy a different item. We are talking about the stone effect grain format, historically called Scotch Grain. Its smallest version is the Pin Grain, with a very small grain visual texture, more suitable for leather women’s shoes.

Calf Suede

Calf suede is a skin that is used for its internal part, that is, the one that is under the flower. This suede is not a Split like Split Leather, but it is a full grain with very careful and selected hair. In this way, the skin does not undergo any layering treatment, just a slight leveling of the hair. This is the most prestigious fur item in a plush look and is essential for classic Oxfords or more elegant unlined loafers.

Calf Split Suede

It is the most sporty version of calf suede and is obtained by dividing the grain of the skin, leaving two parts: one for grain leathers and the other or Split with a plush appearance. They are usually used from larger leathers, of bovine origin and are ideal for men’s casual footwear as they offer greater versatility for each type of shoe. They also allow for greater durability than calf suede.
